Tongi

Tongi, city in central Bangladesh, situated 24 km (15 mi) north of Dhaka, the national capital. An industrial city, Tongi has several jute- and cotton-processing facilities. It is also a significant trade center. Tongi has developed into an important site for the manufacture of clothing for export, the country’s main source of foreign currency. A major railway station in Tongi primarily handles freight. Roads connect Tongi with the capital city and the rest of the country. Population (1991) 181,000.
