Jessore

Jessore, city in southwestern Bangladesh, in Khulna Division. Jessore is located about 50 km (about 30 mi) northwest of Khulna on the Bhairab River in the Ganges River Delta. It serves as a regional market center trading in rice, sugarcane, and dates. An important regional airport operates in Jessore, which is also connected with the rest of the country by a road and railway network. The Bangladesh Air Force Academy is 8 km (5 mi) from the city, near a military base. Jessore has four colleges affiliated with Rajshahi University. Population (1991) 176,398.
