Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina's parliamentary speech, given on 16th April 1992, on the subject of Golam Azam and the public tribunal.

The Government has added a shameful chapter the history of liberation war:
I have already told you the names of those who have been charged with sedition against the nation. Jahanara Imam is the mother of a freedom fighter. She told her own son- "Go, I am sacrificing you to the war." She sent her own son to war. She also lost her husband. Jahanara Imam is unwell. Cancer is eating her up bit by bit. In spite of her bad health she is going to the remotest regions that are reverberating with the cries of millions of martyrs and violated mothers and sisters. The nation cannot accept charges of sedition against someone like her. I feel that by charging these people with sedition the government has started a shameful chapter in the liberation war history of free and sovereign Bangladesh.
Therefore, through you I am requesting the government to immediately drop all charges against the members of the public tribunal. Instead of charging war criminals, the government has charged freedom fighters. We simply cannot accept such a move. I am presenting this as a proposal today and I am submitting a copy of the proposal to you.
Opposition leader's recommendation in light of the discussion regarding Golam Azam.
"I am calling upon the government, through you, to realize the judgement of the people given on 26th March 1992 by forming a tribunal, according to the International Crime Act '73, to legally address the crimes committed by Pakistani citizen Golam Azam, an anti-liberation figure, a war criminal, a mass murderer, a conspirator for East Pakistan even after the independence of Bangladesh and perpetrator of illegal methods of assuming power in this country. I am proposing that the relevant ministry take immediate steps to indict Golam Azam and his accomplices. At the same time, I am expressing my regret over the insulting legal charges that have been brought against the conductors of the Public Tribunal and requesting, through you, that those charges be immediately dropped."
I hope there will be no more conflict of opinion regarding this issue. There should be no doubt that trying the murderer Golam Azam the only way we can pay our respects to the souls of the millions of martyrs and to the honor of our violated mothers and sisters and establish the goals and values of our liberation war.
With this hope, I thank you and end my speech.

Khoda Hafez.
